Intel agencies going to ‘war’ over IT security or Why the heck does it take so long to create policy in the IC?

Intel agencies going to ‘war’ over IT security

Just saw this article on GCN and found some things particularly interesting… Dale Meyerrose, the DNI/CIO, stated: “We haven’t updated our security policy since 2001,” he said. “It took three years to write and four years to get approved. We will do this in 11 months.”

Can you imagine that? What if the business world worked that way? I bet commercial companies work create policies in less than a month. How does Google or Bank of America do it? Maybe the IC should be talking to them…

The Security Standard – 6-7 Sep 2006 in Boston

The Security Standard

This particular conference is geared toward commercial security senior security professionals, but I thought I post it here anyway because I know the government could learn a thing or two from the commercial world on how to manage security.

It is on Sep 6-7 so I know it is pretty short notice. If you make there, let me know how it goes…

BTW, here are the key conference tracks:

Identifying effective risk management strategies
Lessons learned from risk modeling; selling the value of security; risk management in a global business environment
Understanding how security influences the business
Top analysts speak out on the critical challenges facing organizations today; making employees an integral piece of the security picture to ensure that there are no weak links
Exploring perceptions beyond the organization
How security impacts customers; the secrets to creating successful business partnerships; the changing legal and regulatory landscape
Choosing the right technology strategies
Identity and access management solutions; application and database security; the need for multi-factor authentication and managed security services
Evaluating the new threat landscape
How research and trend data are helping senior decision makers understand what to prepare for in a time of increasing—and increasingly ominous—new threats and attacks on critical infrastructure and applications

PROCUREMENT CONUNDRUM | WHAT’S INSIDE THE BOX?
When the State Department purchased 16,000 ThinkCentre desktop
computers earlier this year from a company partially owned by the
Chinese government, critics warned of the potential risks to national
security.

RED STORM RISING

Check out this story!
A growing band of civilian units inside China is writing malicous code
and training to launch cyberstrikes into enemy systems. And for many
of these units, the first enemy is the U.S. Defense Department.

Building the IA Offensive Line – By Mickey McCarter – Military Information Technology

The Department of Defense has been making significant progress in recent months to implement various information assurance initiatives, according to DoD Information Assurance Director Robert Lentz.

One of the most promising activities that Lentz refers to is the Cross Domain Management Office, which was created with Dale Meyerrose and the Office of the DNI/CIO.

Let’s see how this works out… One would hope that their would be less redundancy at the very least…
