Looks like there won't be too much latency when accessing second life... or Hooray for 150mbps downloads (in a couple of years)

I just saw this article ("Comcast CEO shows off 150 megabits per second download on next-gen modem") on the MIT Technology Review website from AP and must say that I am pretty impressed. But then I think again and say to myself, "Well, what do you expect?" Comcast and the other cable providers are not about to let the Verizon beat them at their own game.

I definitely like what Comcast Corp. Chief Executive Brian Roberts said: "What consumers actually do with all this speed is up to the imagination of the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.'' It's good to see that he recognizes who is really driving this!

So what would you do with greater bandwidth?

Companies to look out for in a year or two brought to you by the Maryland Technology Development Corp

I just saw this article on the Washington Business Journal website stating that Maryland Technology Development Corporation (a public/private company which, according to their website, is Maryland's leading source of funding for technology transfer and development programs and entrepreneurial business assistance) "awarded six Maryland Technology companies nearly $450,000 in combined funding."

The companies that received funding are:
  • Hygea BioPharma which is working to develop a vaccine against infectious bursal disease virus, or IBDV, in chickens,
  • Immunomic Therapeutics which is working to license a protein to use as a novel enhancement for DNA vaccines,
  • MobiLaps which is working to provide a suite of technologies that empower Internet service providers to become portals for e-commerce activities among local users and local businesses,
  • BCG Wireless which is working to commercialize advanced signal processing technology for use in radio frequency systems and networks,
  • Nano Solutions (which only employs one person!) and is working to develop an energy storage device, and
  • Dockside Vision which is working to develop a highly visual and interactive information system.
Personally, just from reading the article, I think that the most promising ones (based just on their short descriptions above) are Nano Solutions and Dockside Vision. Maybe it's just me but I'm a sucker for energy companies and from the name (Nano Solutions), it could be that the person may be looking at licensing nano storage devices or batteries. Interesting...

As for Dockside, I like anything that makes it more natural to interact with computers. Maybe that's what they are looking to do...

One other note is the fact that single person companies (like Nano Solutions) are able to obtain funding to do stuff. Very cool...

Remember, you heard it hear first, Nano Solutions and Dockside are my picks!
